We tend to think of spring as the time of when foals arrive, but this wild mare we came across in the Okanagan last week was heavy with foal. She seemed to be paying no attention to her surroundings, only now and then suddenly perking up and looking around her--unlike the nearby stallion who was flighty, finally trotting away from the mare and disappearing down a gully. The horse on the ground behind the mare stayed put. Watching the pregnant mare, we realized that birth might be imminent and she was in pain. We quickly moved away to give her space. It would be so great to go back soon and see if there is a new foal in the area.
